What's In Store For Flames Of War
with John-Paul

With a new year already well underway it is well past due to bring you up to date with what we have planned for the rest of 2011 and beyond. Let us begin with Flames Of War.

Last year we saw the launch of Blitzkrieg in all its glory and the arrival of the final period of the war that we had yet to tackle. Since its launch in August we have released an entire range of new models for Early-war in a relatively short space of time with almost every model covered in the lists out already or soon to be. The arrival of Early-war has meant that we have all three periods of the war on the go at once and this has meant that our planning for 2011 and onwards would need to take this all into account. What we have ended up with is creating a schedule that has regular slots each year rolling forward that will be filled with the next part of the puzzle for each period. To illustrate let me go through how this works.

Early War
We started with an August release of Blitzkrieg and will be aiming for the August month each year to bring you the next instalment in that series. This year it is Hellfire & Back, a 200 page hard back book covering the fighting in the desert during early-war. We will follow this up in August 2012 with a Barbarossa book of equal size to cover the battles on the eastern front and continue along this path for 2013 with more early-war books. This plan gives us a full year for each book to not only cover the period in depth but get models and additional material out to the world. These books are 2½ times a Late-war intelligence briefing so they represent that amount of lists and models.

Late-War
Our rolling plan for Late-war continues as we move on from Stalin’s Europe to Cassino and the battles surrounding the famous monastery. This is the final book in the Italy series and whilst we had a normal book in mind when we started the inspiration stick was working over-time that week and we have ended up with a 152 page book that not only has all the lists we planned but a whole new way of playing with infantry forces called Infantry Aces

Infantry Aces
Infantry Aces also heralds another surprise; I did say the stick was working overtime, in the form of some plastic scenic bases that will allow infantry forces to be themed to theatres. This first set is Italy themed and will come with a selection of unique sculpted bases with plug-in add-ons to do a full company of infantry without repeating a single base. Imagine our resin artillery bases in plastic with lots and lots of cool bits you can add to them and you are in the right place. These will be out with the book in June and will be followed by other sets as new books are released

Following on from Italy we will be heading into the Bulge at the end of the year as well as creating another set of compilations for the Christmas season as we did last year with D-Day. What this gives you for late-war is at least two intelligence hand-books and compilation or two each year rolling forward.

Citação :
Mid-War
We started with intelligence hand books back in 2003 with Diving Eagles and having since compiled the range of mid-war books into North Africa and Eastern Front they have been serving the period well but we felt that the desert was the perfect place to re-visit some of those classic forces and so instead of having just one book on the desert in the form of Hellfire & Back for the early-war we have a second tome in the form of Desert War following on it heals. This is a selection of additional lists, about 100 pages worth, and a Firestorm desert campaign that allows companies and raiding forces to participate across not only early-war but mid-war as well. Mike Haught and the team have been working hard on this and Infantry Aces to really create more variety of ways to play Flames Of War.

More detail will follow on each of these projects over the next few months and as we get images of anything exciting we will share them with you.

Vietnam
Last year in Wargames Illustrated we tried something new and let a charge of enthusiasm for an exciting period, led by Pete, culminate in our first attempt at adapting the Flames Of War mechanics to other periods. The result was a wonderful success and with so many people getting excited about both the idea and the period we realised that it could not simply be a one-off. What we have decided to do is bring you Vietnam part II this April with a following instalment each year. The rolling plan has us adding to the forces, models and how it can be played. This has made us realise that Flames Of War Vietnam has become our second period and it will receive ongoing support.

Phil takes us back to a Vietnam in WI282 to bring you the armour and new helicopters for the US and the big guns for the PAVN. Rather than just taking up space in WI we decided to include the 48 page intelligence handbook as a bonus with WI so that everything you need to play is now its own book as well as being free. Phil being the excellent chap he is did not only get you new lists but included everything from the first outing we made to Vietnam so this booklet really has everything you need to play.

Now no good book would be the same without some great new models and we have 15 A6 boxes, and some tokens and dice to give you reason to not buy quite some many chocolate eggs this Easter, and pick up a new Cobra instead

As the individual codes are looked at in more detail the trend you will see is that all the helicopters now have plastic rotors and engines and a new flying stand with both parts magnetised so that you can remove your helicopter from its base and take its rotors off to protect it between games

Citação :
As well as new helicopter technology you have lots of armour with variant sculpts and decal sheets suited to each code and the PAVN adding a new level of firepower that means not even the mighty M48A3 is safe as you will see in the battle-report in WI282 in which Kyran and Mark duke it out with surprising results
