Warhammer: Vampire CountsThe Vampires of the Old World claim dominion over the mortal remains of all earthly creatures. To die is to surrender oneself to their power, Patient, cunning, devious, the Vampires work to conquer the lands of the living with ancient and corrupt sorcery. Should they succeed in their dreaded goals, the rays of the sun shall be forever suffocated by the night, and the age of men will be replaced by an age of the dead. The world will be transformed into a ghastly necropolis of mindless and uncaring slaves, ruled over by the iron will of the Vampire Counts.

When death alone is certain, how can the living possibly hope to prevail?

This 96-page full-colour hardback Warhammer Army book contains all the rules you need to field a Vampire Counts army, as well as detailed background information, bestiary, accompanying artwork and miniatures showcase.

Vampire Counts Coven Throne / Mortis Engine
The monarchs of the night are often borne to war on gilded palanquins known as Coven Thrones. These bone-framed constructs are held aloft by the departed spirits of those slain by the Vampire and doomed to bear them into battle for eternity. Of all the Vampire bloodlines, it is the Lahmians who are famed for their use of the Coven Thrones, and as such they are often bedecked with rare artefacts and scrying pools full of the blood of innocents. Despite their luxury, these ostentatious palanquins are potent weapons - a coven of Vampires fighting as one is as formidable a prospect as any Dragon or Daemon Lord.

The Mortis Engine is both a tomb and a shrine to the most powerful Necromancers to walk the world. Once dead (properly dead), the remains of these powerful wizards are enshrined within the Mortis Engine and borne to war by a host of spirits bound to the infernal device. Surrounded by wailing Banshees and pulled by Undead revenants, it is a terrifying sight to behold. Yet amidst the cacophony of Undead souls stands the Corpsemaster - the keeper of the reliquary - a source of unimaginable power. With bony hands he removes the case that holds the artefact and unleashes its power upon the battlefield. Foes wither and die in droves as the Corpsemaster allows the Mortis Engine to releases its true power, which only grows more intense as the battle reaches its gory climax.

This multi-part plastic kit contains 87 components with which to build one Vampire Counts Coven Throne or one Mortis Engine. The kit comes with plenty of optional extras, including two very different heroes - the sinister Corpsemaster surrounded by a swarm of howling Banshees, and the seductive (but no less deadly) Vampire and her handmaidens. This kit comes with a 50x100mm chariot base. This miniature is supplied unpainted and requires assembly - we recommend using Citadel Plastic Glue and Citadel Paints.

COVEN THRONE
Cower, mortals, before the glory of the Coven Throne! A grisly palanquin for the Queens of Undeath, the Coven Throne is the most impressive and macabre chariot to have graced the Warhammer world in unliving memory. A trio of beautiful female vampires lounges upon the Throne - not only are they drop-dead gorgeous (ahem), they also make for a hell of a fighting force, especially with the Pallid Handmaidens' Always Strikes First ability and re-rolls aplenty courtesy of their blood-filled Scrying Pool. A 4+ Ward save ensures the super-chariot will get into combat, but it's the Coven Throne's Battle Of Wills that is its most unusual defence. Enemy units simply gawp awe (or even attack their friends) as the Throne's undead sirens seduce them into eternal servitude. This ability even works in close combat - that horde of Halberdiers is in for a nasty surprise if it botches its Battle of Wills roll. Have your Vampire Lord travel in style and watch the enemy battle line crumble in fear as a result.

MORTIS ENGINE
There is little more terrifying in the dark reaches of Sylvania than the Mortis Engine - the Warhammer World's answer to a ticking time bomb. This arcane construction is essentially a regenerating chariot, and its Blasphemous Tome can add power to the spells of your wizards. Furthermore, the Banshee Swarm that swirls around its bone-cage has a deadly Ghostly Howl attack that you can use even whilst in combat. However, these abilities pale next to its primary weapon. The Engine drains energy from the living and gives it to the dead - the reliquary at the Mortis Engine's rear contains an artefact of undeath that grows more powerful as the game progresses. It inflicts hits on nearby enemy units with a Strength value equal to the turn number, whilst bestowing Regeneration abilities on all Undead units around it. However, so potent are the Mortis Engine's energies that it can damage itself in the process, and once it is destroyed it explodes in a blast wave of pure evil. My favourite tactic is to use the Mortis Engine as a support unit for the first half of the game and then deliberately get it killed in the closing stages so that it detonates spectacularly, scything down every unit within an 18" radius. Doom all round!

Vampire Counts Black Knights / Hexwraiths
Black Knights come from a time many centuries ago, when barbarian tribes roamed what is now the Empire. Upon their death they were buried with their most prized possessions - their blade, their armour, and their steed. When Vampires come to the burial mound of a Black Knight, their innate magical aura re-awakens these corpse-warriors and they burst from their graves ready to do battle. So powerful is the bond between rider and mount that they can gallop straight through buildings as if they were not there, or charge across the surface of a lake without leaving so much as a ripple. Despite their insubstantial Undead nature, their blades are all too real and many a foe has died to their enchanted blades.

Hexwraiths are born in the very depths of the Underworld, their only goal to hunt down those who have cheated death. They share many similarities with Cairn Wraiths, and their scythe-like weapons are just as deadly (if not more-so). Because of their incorporeal forms, a Hexwraith can simply shimmer between worlds, their scythes re-materialising inside the bodies of their foes. Armour is no protection against these cackling Undead monstrosities - they will run down their victims swiftly and violently and claim their souls for the afterlife.

This multi-part plastic set contains 91 components to construct five Vampire Counts Black Knights or five Hexwraiths. The set has enough parts to build a full unit of five Black Knights, which can include a command group with a standard bearer, musician and Hell Knight. There are also five sets of scythe arms and alternative heads, which can be used to build a unit of Hexwraiths. This set comes with five 25x50mm cavalry bases. These miniatures are supplied unpainted and require assembly - we recommend using Citadel Plastic Glue and Citadel Paints.

BLACK KNIGHTS
Tried and tested for time immemorial as the shock cavalry of the Vampire Counts, Black Knights are the ancient horsemen of the tribes that existed before Sigmar. Heavily armoured and frequently carrying lances, you could be forgiven for thinking that Black Knights are similar to their counterparts in the Empire, but these are no normal cavalry we have here. With a 2+ save, Toughness 4 and immunity to Panic, these guys are practically guaranteed to smash into the enemy on time on target. With high-strength attacks and Killing Blow to back it up, you can even impale enemy characters on the charge. Best of all, unlike their mortal equivalents, Black Knights can be resurrected with a pulse of dark magic - even the signature spell from the Lore of the Vampires can see up to five of them get back in the saddle should they fall.

HEXWRAITHS
The very thought of scythe-wielding ethereal cavalry is enough to turn many Warhammer generals as white as a Spirit Host. Though Hexwraiths cost a packet of points each, there's no getting away from the fact that many enemy units simply cannot hurt them - conventional swords, cannonballs and great weapons just pass right through them. In return the flaming spirit-scythes of these reaper knights count as magical and allow no armour saves - they can cut right through the thickest armour, snatching away the soul of the mortal within. Better yet, their wielders can ride straight through enemy units, making scythe attacks as they go - there's no escaping from the Hexwraiths if they've come for you! Would-be masters of the ethereal should watch out for enemy spells, though - a single magic missile can see these guys go up in smoke with little more than an anguished wail.

Vampire Counts Vargheists / Crypt Horrors
Vargheists are the darkness in a Vampire's soul made manifest. They are towering winged humanoids, each several times the size of a man. Though the Vargheists were once noble Vampires, they have since devolved into ravening predatorsdesperate for the taste of blood. They prowl the battlefield in packs, ready to pounce upon the least sign of weakness and tear a hole in the enemy ranks with crimson claw and bloody fang. Vargheists are formidable fighters, for their raw fury and terrible hunger is undiminished by the control exerted over them by their cruel, vampiric masters.

The malformed monstrosities known as Crypt Horrors are, thankfully, a rare sight, though in times of open war their shambling forms can often be seen marching alongside the armies of the Ghoul Kings. Like all Ghouls they are created out of desperation - they are the lowest of the low (they don't even have the decency to be properly dead), but no less deadly for it. Even a shallow wound from one of their filth-encrusted talons is enough to kill a man in seconds, his insides rotting and ruined by their vile touch.

This multi-part plastic set contains 62 components to construct three Vampire Counts Vargheists or three Crypt Horrors, including a variety of heads (all of which are incredibly ugly), and six sets of arms - three clinging on to a variety of decayed body parts, and three with wings. This set comes with three 40mm monster bases. These miniatures are supplied unpainted and require assembly - we recommend using Citadel Plastic Glue and Citadel Paints.

VARGHEISTS
Flying monstrous infantry - a blood-curdling thought, and something that only the Vampire Counts could introduce to the Warhammer world. Vargheists are essentially devolved Vampires, so they pack a hell of a punch. With four Strength 5 attacks and a Stomp to back them up, these monstrous, bat-winged horrors can put the hurt on almost any enemy model. It's their speed that's their real trump card, though; an aspect of the unit that will be most welcome to undead players. With the Vampiric ability on their side they can always march, allowing you to swoop across the battlefield to threaten the enemy flank or rear - a flying hammer to your main battleline's anvil.

CRYPT HORRORS
Crypt Horrors are hulking, dirt-encrusted terrors born from the unwholesome stock of the Crypt Ghoul tribes. They have all the resilience of their ghoul brethren and then some - with Toughness 5, three Wounds, Regeneration (5+) and the Unbreakable special rule common to all Undead, they are hard as coffin nails. They can dish it out, too, thanks to their numerous Poisonous Attacks. These cannibalistic monstrosities make great shock troops for the Strigoi Ghoul Kings - they may be considered the bastard children of the necromantic arts and have terrible table manners to boot, but by Sigmar they can fight...

Vampire Counts Wight King
In ancient times, mighty warlords fought across the land that is known as the Empire. Upon their death, these brutal warriors were buried deep beneath the ground, their tombs protected from thieves and looters by shamanistic spells. Many of these tombs are now long gone; but many others still remain. Some were built in areas where Dark Magic flows and pools. In these accursed places, the incumbents rest uneasily, their souls flickering between the world of mortals and the realm of the afterlife. When the Dark Magic grows strong, the ancient warlords rise from their crypts as Wight Kings, eyes glowing with unnatural life. The merest touch of their blade can drain the life from their foes, or slice through flesh and bone with effortless ease. Clad in heavy armour, their bodies are virtually invulnerable to damage, making them a popular hero to lead Skeleton Warriors or Grave Guard into battle.

Isabella von Carstein was once a noblewoman, and the only child of the mad Count Otto von Drak. Without a male heir to his estate, Otto vowed to marry his daughter to a nobleman worthy of his land, though of course, that meant none of the local lords, who were all bitter rivals. The man to whom Isabella was eventually wed, was Vlad von Carstein, a darkly handsome nobleman from the north. Many years later, when Isabella fell ill to a fatal wasting disease, Vlad finally gave into Isabella's request and allowed her to join him in Undeath. As a Vampire she would march into battle alongside Vlad, bolstering his might with the legendary Blood Chalice of Bathori - an ancient heirloom suffused with Dark Magic.

Krell, Lord of UndeathKrell was a mighty Chaos Champion in the days before the birth of Sigmar, the ruler of a barbarian tribe that had been corrupted by the Chaos God Khorne. Though eventually slain by the Dwarf hero Grimbul Ironhelm during his assault on Karak Kadrin, Krell was returned to the mortal realm almost 1500 years later at the mercy of the great Necromancer, Nagash (though much deader than when he left it). Krell was finally defeated by Sigmar many years later and the resurrected (again) by Heinrich Kemmler, the Lichemaster. Armed with the Black Axe - a terrifying weapon of immense proportions, Krell will cut a bloody swathe through all in his path.

Von Carstein Upgrade PackThe von Carstein family is the most influential of all the Vampire families. Where others have disappeared or fallen into madness, the von Carsteins have taken over an entire province of the Empire - Sylvania - made it their home, and been a nuisance to the world of the living ever since. Their personal heraldry is the giant Vampire Bat, and their shields and banners will often carry this emblem to show their enemies who they are dealing with.

This pack contains 12 von Carstein shields and one von Carstein banner - all of which are finely detailed resin cast pieces. These parts are designed to fit on the Skeleton Warrior and Grave Guard kits, though the shields would look just as good on Black Knights or Blood Knights. The banner would also make an excellent Battle Standard. These components are supplied unpainted and require assembly - we recommend using Citadel Super Glue and Citadel Paints
